15 years of WTECH at Rome International Airport
The project carried out at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome is a landmark for Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis in critical infrastructure. In 2009, the administration opted for the installation of 1,280 WTECH OXYPROM diffusers, basing the decision on the superiority of the technical specification over the lower immediate acquisition cost.
After 15 years of continuous operation under high demand conditions, the system has demonstrated that the robustness of the design eliminates the common failure variables in the sector. The case validates that operational predictability and the integrity of high-standard components translate into real savings, drastically reducing maintenance contingencies and ensuring regulatory compliance without interruptions.

Challenges
- High load volatility: Management of effluents from a flow of 40 million passengers/year, with variations in hydraulic and organic load.
- 24/7 operating regime : Requirement for full system availability, where unscheduled shutdowns entail environmental risks and regulatory sanctions.
- CAPEX vs. OPEX financial dilemma: Budgetary pressure to reduce initial investment at the expense of long-term maintenance costs.
- Technical stress conditions: Harsh operating environment that tests the mechanical and chemical resistance of membranes and retaining rings.
- Risk management : The need to ensure the continuity of the biological process without failures in aeration, a critical component of the treatment.
Results
- 100% Mechanical Integrity : After 15 years, there were no recorded diffuser ruptures or damage to retaining rings.
- Flow efficiency: Zero clogging occurrences in the 1,280 installed components, keeping pressure drop within design parameters.
- Reduced maintenance costs: Elimination of corrective interventions and premature replacements, resulting in highly predictable OPEX.
Strategic optimization: Any component replacement occurred solely for technological upgrades and performance gains, not due to physical degradation.
- Regulatory stability: Guarantee of compliance with European environmental standards throughout the system's life cycle, without operational deviations.
- Return on Investment (ROI): The extreme durability of the materials proved that the diluted cost per year of operation was significantly lower than that of systems with low initial costs.
